French toast is quite possibly one of the best breakfast items that can easily hover between savory and sweet. You can make this delectable meal in 15 minutes or less, or you can dress it up, bake it, load it with fruit, or stuff it with mouthwatering concoctions like ricotta and lemon or maple walnut. But easy whole wheat low calorie French toast? Way less guilt and still a very enjoyable meal. I am dreaming up a handful of these recipes as we speak, but this simple whole wheat French toast will hit the spot and give you a nice boost of whole-grains while you are at it!
Now I am not one to make New Year’s resolutions. I think it is absolutely fine to make them, but I just love the fresh slate of a new year without a bunch of heavy stipulations being placed on it. I definitely like to try and reset my diet after the holidays though, and have pulled way back on my sugar consumption this week. I was going overboard from about Thanksgiving until Christmas, and I feel it! There are just so many delicious items being made and shared during this time, and I submit that one of the most fun things that one can do is get into the kitchen and bake up something fresh and homemade on a cold winter day!
What you’ll need for this Low Calorie French Toast:

Vanilla Extract
In order to ensure a low calorie french toast recipe, you’ll want your bread to be five ingredients or less if you can. At the very least, pick a brand that has no added sugar and is truly 100% whole wheat {Trader Joe’s makes a good one}. I used blue sky family farms eggs in this recipe, and they were marvelous. There’s nothing like knowing where your food comes from, and the sustainable practices they use cultivate fresh and delicious organic free range eggs.
A few bullet points about this brand from their owners:
- We are one of the few specialty egg brands that are actually vertically integrated. This means we make our own chicken feed and we own our chickens. We have them from chicks to retirement and work with over 70 family farmers here in the United States. We are passionate about letting chickens behave like chickens. Providing Free Range chickens with over 10 acres to roam (22 sq. ft. per hen) and our Pasture Raised chickens have over 50 acres to roam (108 sq. ft. per hen). Plenty of room for dustbathing, perching, scratching, socializing, and pasteurizing all day outside.
- Blue Sky Family Farms hold the highest standard of egg quality being American Humane Certified, Verified Non-GMO for our regular brown eggs and USDA Organic Certified for our organic eggs. We also have a soy free option of eggs for those who prefer a soy free diet or have an allergy.
- We practice regenerative agriculture, which is sustainable farming. The focus of regenerative egg farming is on restoring and maintaining soil health, increasing biodiversity, and creating a symbiotic relationship between chickens and the environment. At its core, regenerative agriculture aims to combat climate change and improve the ecosystem of the planet.
These practices make me want to support them even more and be a customer for life! You can purchase these eggs locally in Southern Oregon at any Fred Meyer location.
I hope you enjoy this French toast, and as always, tag me if you make it!

Low Calorie French Toast
Ingredients
- 4 slices whole wheat bread
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoon 2% dairy milk (or plant based milk)
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Heat a pancake pan or large frying pan on medium heat.
- Whisk eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla together in a medium sized, flat bottomed bowl. This will be easier for dipping the bread in.
- Butter the pan prior to each set of French toast. Gently dip a slice of bread into the mixture, and flip over to coat the other side as well. Allow excess to drip off. Place in buttered pan and allow to cook until golden, about 1-2 minutes. Flip and cook an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Remove to plate and top with butter, syrup, powdered sugar, peanut butter, or fruit. Serve immediately and enjoy!
