How to Make Homemade Caramel Sauce (Three-Ingredients)

This is THE butteriest, smoothest, and easiest homemade caramel sauce! It cooks in about ten minutes, and it’s made with three simple ingredients you most likely already have on hand: granulated sugar, butter, and heavy cream.

    pouring fresh homemade caramel sauce

I bought pre-made caramel from the grocery store for years.

I was admittedly intimidated to make homemade caramel sauce from scratch, but I finally gave it a shot, and I am so glad that I did!

My version has a bit more butter for that incredibly lush flavor. I cook the sugar to a dark amber color, and this yields a deep, rich, and vibrant caramel sauce.

This homemade caramel sauce can be used for WHATever you can dream up!

    Dip apples into it.

    Drizzle it on a cake.

Top cookies with it (and sprinkle a little sea salt on them while you’re at it).

There is no wrong way to enjoy this homemade treat!

What You’ll Need to Make This Homemade Caramel Sauce Recipe

    1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup salted butter (I use Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter for an even richer flavor)

    ½ cup heavy cream

Heat sugar on medium to high heat in a sauce pan, whisking until melted.

Be cautious as you do not want the sugar to burn, and be aware of splatter as well. It will be extremely hot!

Once the sugar reduces to a dark amber colored liquid, about 3-5 minutes, add the butter. Whisk this bubbly liquid until fully combined and with no remaining lumps. Lower heat to a simmer.

Slowly add the heavy cream, and mix until well combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Caramel will thicken as it cools.

If mixture clumps up at all, simply pop the pan back onto the burner and turn the heat back up to medium for a minute or two of vigorous stirring. It will come together. Store in an airtight glass container for up to one month in the refrigerator. You can warm the caramel to loosen it up after it has been refrigerated, as it will stiffen. It is still pliable though, so it can be eaten warm or cold. Enjoy!
