Make three amazing blossom cookie flavors (plus more combinations by rearranging the kisses!) with this easy Blossom Cookies, Three Ways recipe. It’ll streamline your holiday baking!
Today is Christmas EVE. It’s my favorite time of year, and I truthfully have no idea how the season flew by quite as fast as it did, but today and tomorrow are going to be MAGICAL. There’s a small chance that we’ll even get some powdery white stuff on the big day (translation: snow. We don’t see it often in Southern Oregon), and that makes us even more excited! Topping off my excitement for this week are these Blossom Cookies, Three Ways. What does this mean, exactly? Well, instead of having to make three batches of cookies to get three different flavors, you can make one batch and get three flavors. Sounds like a time saver, right? And an ingredient saver when you really don’t need oodles of cookies lying around after the fact. It’s really the perfect solution, and this solution also was the star of my 2021 Christmas Cookie Box: The Blossom Box. Enjoy!
What you’ll need to make these Blossom cookies, three ways:
Salted butter
Granulated sugar
Large eggs
Salt
Pure vanilla extract
All purpose flour
Unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa
All natural peanut butter
Milk chocolate Hershey kisses
Candy cane Hershey kisses
Mint chocolate Hershey kisses
The Batter
This batter is unique in that it makes three different flavors of blossom cookies. Now blossoms are traditionally made with a peanut butter cookie base, and a milk chocolate Hershey kiss pressed into the middle right when it comes out of the oven. These are fantastic cookies, and I have a traditional recipe for this right here. However, I wanted to mix it up this year and create a couple of fun alternatives to the peanut butter chocolate ones. This recipe makes three flavors:
Sugar cookies (topped with both Candy cane kisses and mint chocolate kisses)
Chocolate cookies (topped with both Candy cane kisses and mint chocolate kisses)
Peanut butter sugar cookies (topped with milk chocolate kisses)
The third variety is definitely closest to the original, so you get that authenticity while also trying a a couple of new flavors at the same time.
The Process
The batter is *mostly* mixed up, and then divided into three bowls. Now I say mostly because we withhold a bit of flour so that we can create each of the three flavors individually. We add the last of the flour to the sugar cookie bowl and to the peanut butter bowl, but use less in the peanut butter bowl. The chocolate bowl gets unprocessed Dutch cocoa powder in place of the remaining flour. Once all of the batters have been finalized, we scoop out 2-tbsp dough balls, roll each in granulated sugar, bake, top with kisses of choice, and cool. It’s that simple, and three cookie variations are immediately at your fingertips.
The Dietary Substitutions
I love providing gluten and dairy free substitutions so that those with alternate dietary needs can enjoy my recipes to their fullest! These are subs that I have either use and continue to stock in my own home, or that have come highly recommended from others. I want your baking experience to be the best it can be, and avoiding gluten or dairy shouldn’t hinder that process in the slightest.
As always, here is a list of tried and true dietary substitutes, so that you can enjoy this recipe without the additions of gluten or dairy:
Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour is a wonderful all-purpose sub, and it’s cup for cup, so use the same measurements as you would all-purpose flour.
Miyokos Butter is a plant based brick that closely resembles dairy butter not only in its look, but it’s taste as well. It melts, browns, and spreads just like real butter, and truly is a fantastic substitute in this recipe. Use it as a 1:1 ratio sub, same as the flour, so the recipe measurements will not change.
These allergy friendly holiday square chocolates by Enjoy Life would be great kisses substitutes.
I hope you love this amazing cookie recipe done three ways! Have a very Merry Christmas. I am so thankful for Jesus Christ, who came to earth as a baby to live a sinless human life, and give his life for mine. This is the ultimate gift, and it is why we celebrate Christmas. I hope you have a wonderful and restful day with your family and friends, and remember to cherish the moments that make this life so precious. Merry Christmas from our family to yours!
XO,
Heather
Blossom Cookies, Three Ways
Ingredients
- 1 Cup salted butter, softened
- 1 Cup granulated sugar
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 Cups all purpose flour
- For Variations:
- 2 tablespoon all purpose flour (added to the sugar cookie bowl)
- 2 tablespoon Dutch processed cocoa (added to the chocolate cookie bowl)
- 2 tablespoon all natural peanut butter (added to the peanut butter sugar cookie bowl)
- 1 Tbsp all purpose flour (added to peanut butter sugar cookie bowl)
- Granulated sugar, for rolling
- hershey kisses: milk chocolate, candy cane, and mint chocolate flavors
Instructions
- With a mixer or by hand, cream the butter and sugar. Add both eggs, and continue to mix until incorporated. Add the baking soda, salt, vanilla, and 2 cups all purpose flour, mixing until dough forms.
- Divide the dough evenly into three bowls. To the first bowl, the sugar cookie bowl, add 2 tablespoons all purpose flour and mix well.
- To the second bowl, the chocolate cookie bowl, add the Dutch processed cocoa powder and mix until incorporated.
- To the third bowl, the peanut butter sugar cookie bowl, add the 2 tablespoons all natural peanut butter +1 tablespoon all-purpose flour and mix until incorporated.
- Going bowl by bowl, scoop cookie dough out in 2 tablespoons balls, roll in granulated sugar, and place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes.
- While the cookies are baking, unwrap your Hershey kisses. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, gently press a Hershey kiss of your desired flavor into the middle of each cookie. Allow to cool completely. You may remove cookies to a wire rack to cool instead of leaving them on the baking pan, but be cautious as the kisses melt a bit before hardening up again as the cookies cool. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days. Enjoy!
